Strange, Bizarre, and Interesting Facts About Sex

Introduction

Sex is weird, isn’t it? Two (or more!) naked, sweaty bodies bumping and grinding and sliding up and down each other. No wonder Shakespeare described it as “making the beast with two backs”.

In this listicle, we’ll be looking at the strange, bizarre, and admittedly interesting world that is sex – what happens to our bodies during copulation, what sex is like for some creatures in the animal kingdom, bizarre sex world records, and strange but scientific facts about sex.

Sex and Our Bodies

It may not be on the forefront of people’s minds when they’re in the middle of getting some juicy action but lots of reactions and changes go on in and to our bodies when we engage in foreplay and sex. Let’s check out some of them:

  1. Anywhere between 10 million to 1 billion bacteria are exchanged when two people lock lips, possibly less if it’s a sweet PG-13 closed mouth kiss and more if you’re full on French kissing and trying to excavate your partner’s tonsils with your tongue.
  1. The average vagina is between 3 to 4 inches long but can expand by 200% when sexually aroused. Talk about being flexible!
  1. The average speed of sperm during ejaculation is around 28 mph and it takes the swimmers around an hour to swim seven inches.
  1. Studies imply that 30 minutes of active sex burns around 200 calories so why hit the gym when there are more pleasurable ways of getting fit?
  1. Everybody knows that certain body parts down south swell up when aroused but what people may be surprised to learn is that the inner nose swells up too during sex.

Stating the (Sex) Facts

Science really is a marvel, offering fun anecdotes about anything and everything that can be explained. When it comes to sex, science doesn’t disappoint with a plethora of interesting tidbits you may or may not have already been privy to:

  1. The clitoris is the only bodily organ that exists purely for sexual pleasure, hence it being known as an erogenous organ. So why has it historically been neglected by the owner’s partner(s) during sex? A mystery…
  1. Most of the clitoris is internal and the little nub that is visible is literally the tip of it. Clitorises can be as long as 5 inches or 12cm.
  1. Did you know that the clitoris and the penis start off as the same part during early fetal development? They only start developing into different sexual organs around week nine of a woman’s pregnancy.
  1. The urge to ejaculate actually comes from the spinal cord, not the brain. No thinking required!
  1. The average male orgasm lasts a wee 6 seconds compared to the female’s 20 second. Sorry guys.
  1. Studies have found that right-handed males’ left testicles hang lower than the right and the opposite rings true for southpaws. Not convinced? Well, if you’re the proud owner of a pair of danglers, give yourself a once over to see if it’s true!
  1. Only 15% of men have a penis longer than 7 inches and only 3% have a penis longer than 8 inches.
  1. Orgasms have been scientifically verified to lower a woman’s risk of heart disease, strokes, breast cancer, and depression. Well if that’s not motivation to go get some then I don’t know what.
  1. For men, having sex at least once a week can lower their risk of heart disease by 30%, stroke by 50%, and diabetes by 40%. Men with an active sex life are more likely to live past 80 so go on and rub one out! It’s literally good for your health.
  1. A teaspoon of semen contains around 5 calories.
  1. People who sleep on their stomachs with their arms above their heads are more likely to have sex dreams; so if you’re looking for some new material for your spank bank why not give this a go?
  1. A single human male can potentially produce enough sperm in 2 weeks to impregnate every fertile woman on the planet. Talk about being virile!
  1. Women may experience more powerful and intense orgasms around and during their periods due to the increase of blood circulation to the genitals.
  1. Women who have regular weekly sex tend to have more regular menstrual cycles. Good news for those whose periods like to surprise them in the most inconvenient of times.
  1. According to a 2010 Turkish study, heavyset males can last on average, over three times as long in the bedroom compared to their skinnier counterparts. The study, which was conducted over the course of a year, found that heavy set males could keep going for an average of 7 minutes and 18 seconds whereas their skinnier counterparts averaged 108 seconds.
  1. Studies imply that averaging around 4 orgasms a week can drastically reduce a man’s chances of getting prostate cancer.
  1. The average male has around 11 erections a day and 9 a night. Seems a bit inconvenient, no?

Sex and the Animal Kingdom

Humans are not the only creatures in the animal kingdom who like to get down and freaky. In fact, certain sex related behavior among some animals can be considered bizarre and even downright terrifying:

  1. The black widow spider is infamous for eating her mates during or after sex. One female black widow can (literally!) consume up to 20 male black widows a day. Approach with caution…
  1. Female kangaroos have three vaginas but to make things easier for their male partners, only one vaginal opening.
  1. Speaking of Australia’s unique wildlife, the country’s antechinus males, a small mouse-like marsupial, will literally sex themselves to death. They’ll copulate with females for up to 12 hours straight, depleting their bodies of nutrients and proteins until it compromises their immune systems. They then literally collapse and die from exhaustion. Yikes!
  1. Male porcupines urinate on their female partners before sex to stimulate them. So humans are not the only ones to enjoy a golden shower.
  1. Female chickens have a nifty ability to expel up to 80% of unwanted sperm from their bodies. This neat mechanism is so that they can increase their chances of being knocked up by the best rooster in the coop. Imagine if human females had this ability; there’d probably be less pregnancy scares.
  1. Male sheep have a high rate of homosexuality in the animal kingdom – around 10% of them prefer to get it on with other rams and this is an inherited biological trait.

Sex World Records

We’ve all heard about back-breaking sex but what about world record breaking sex? Humans are inherently competitive – it’s what gets the blood pumping and progress going. Thus, it shouldn’t be at all surprising that there are people out there who have broken and made sex world records:

  1. The world record for the most female orgasms in one hour is 134. That’s 2.2 orgasms per minute! This impressive if ridiculous achievement was recorded by doctors from California’s Center for Marital and Sexual Studies.
  1. Porn star Lisa Sparxx set a new world record in 2004 when she had sex with 919 men in a 24 hour period.
  1. Masanobu Sato set a world record for the longest masturbation session in 2009 – nine hours and 33 minutes.
  1. The world’s largest orgy occurred in 2006 in Japan with 500 participants gathering together to get naked, sticky, and sweaty.
